#BiTwitter has declared 2019 as 20BiTeen and we’re starting early with some kick ass songs of the summer. And because THIS WORLD LOVES YOU, all the main artists on this list are enthusiastically, emphatically bi (or here with us under the shade of our big bi umbrella ☂).
The Entire Dirty Computer Album – Janelle Monáe
Dip your whole self into “free-ass motherfucker” Janelle Monáe’s bi delight Dirty Computer. ‘Make Me Feel’ was released as the album’s lead single—let’s start there, shall we?
Baby, don’t make me spell it out for you
While we’re here let’s take a look at ‘I Like That’ – Janelle Monáe
I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs
And I like that
Girls – Rita Ora ft. Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX
Rita Ora busted through the rainbow curtain as bi with her new single ‘Girls’. (And then maybe back through? And back out? And back through again? It’s a journey, girl, we’re here for you.) And while we were all busy welcoming Ora into the world of out queer artists, we also got a bit busy with some real good honest critique about how we view sexuality and who it is for. Wherever you land in the controversy surrounding the song, it’s on my list cause it’s a banger worthy of the name: GIRLS.
I ain’t one-sided, I’m open-minded I’m fifty-fifty and I’m never gonna hide it
“Because when someone sees that someone has stepped into the light so comfortably, they’ll do it too.” Go on over to Taylor Bennett’s interview with Time where he shares his experiences with masculinity, race, how “being the first to disrupt the norm, is so scary,” and more about the inspiration behind his freshly released Pride anthem Be Yourself.
I’m an outstanding Afro-American bisexual havin’ shit Change your dreams if they average
I stayed a night out in Paris where they don’t know my name And I got into some trouble with that drink in my veins I got a problem with parties ’cause it’s loud in my brain And I can never say sorry ’cause I won’t take the blame I know I always go missing and you’re lying awake But if you ask why I’m distant, oh, I’m running away
I Need A Woman To Love – Kesha
‘I Need A Woman To Love’ is Kesha’s gender rework of a classic Janis Joplin jam. The song is her contribution to Universal Love, a short album of wedding songs revisited with queer love in mind. Kesha’s ‘I Need A Woman to Love’ rocks as much as the video, in which she officiates a wedding wearing the most glorious rainbow capelet I have ever seen. I’m adding this song to my playlist but am also here and now declaring, with you as my witness, the capelet as my personal holy grail.
Basically I’ve gotten a lot from this experience, please enjoy the video.
Oh, I need a woman to love me Oh, maybe you could help me, please Oh, I need a woman to love, ’cause I believe that Someday and somehow, it’s bound to come along ‘Cause all my dreams and all my plans just cannot turn out wrong
Rebel Babe – Lucy & La Mer ft. Bugsy
Lucy & La Mer’s new song ‘Rebel Babe’ is all about embracing the many ways to be and kicking down the binaries that try to box us in. My three suggestions: read this interview where she talks about bierasure and ‘Rebel Babe’ with Billboard magazine; add ‘Rebel Babe’ to your playlist; let it all inspire you to tell biphobia and binary social constructs to fuck right off.
Hey little boy, I know you don’t mean to treat me like a toy You’ve got good intentions, but hold up there’s something that I gotta mention You’re not above me and I’m not gonna let you dumb me down You think wherever you go, we go, I’m not gonna tip toe around your ego
This video is so full of joy. Thank you for this, Keiynan Lonsdale, for the gift of you and this song of the summer, this bi anthem of love and light. Don’t wanna hide, don’t wanna hide Most of my life I been terrified Spending my days always questioning Am I wrong to love a man I realised, I realised Ain’t gotta hide this heart of mine I’m gonna fight just to let you know to Open your light, & let it glow
